Thunderbird version 78.0 is only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as an upgrade from Thunderbird version 68 or earlier. A future release will provide updates from earlier versions. Add-on support: As of version 78.0, Thunderbird only supports MailExtensions. Your favorite add-ons may not have been updated for compatibility.

Thunderbird stores your data in a separate location, away from the program filesapplication, called your profile folder. To move your data, copy your profile folder to the equivalent location on your destination computer.

  1. On your source computer, click on the menu button , then go to Help and select Troubleshooting Information.go to the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Locate the 'Profile Folder' entry. Click on . Your Thunderbird profile folder will open in Windows ExplorerFile BrowserFinder.
  3. CloseQuit Thunderbird.
  4. From your Thunderbird profile folder, go up three levelsgo up two levelsopen the Go menu and select Enclosing Folder two times.
  5. Right-clickHold down the control key while you click on the Thunderbird.thunderbird folder, and select CopyCopy 'Thunderbird'.
    NOTE: .thunderbird is a hidden folder. Make sure you have Linux set to show hidden files.
  6. Go to the drive you are using to transfer your data, then right-clickhold down the Ctrl key while you click inside the drive, and select PastePaste Item.
  7. On your destination computer, right-clickhold down the Ctrl key while you click on copy of the Thunderbird folder you created in the previous step, and select CopyCopy 'Thunderbird'.
  8. Open Thunderbird, and close the account setup window if it appears.
  9. Click on the menu button , then go to Help and select Troubleshooting Information.Go to the Help menu and select Troubleshooting Information.
  10. Locate the 'Profile Folder' entry. Click on . Your Thunderbird profile folder will open in Windows ExplorerFile BrowserFinder.
  11. CloseQuit Thunderbird.

If you have used the profile manager to store your data in a custom location, create a new profile in the same location as your prefs.js file. Thunderbird will use the already existing data.

Open the Thunderbird free download page, which detects the platform and language of your computer and recommends the best edition of Thunderbird for you. Click the download link or button. (If you want to download Thunderbird in a language other than the one suggested, click on 'Other Systems & Languages' for the list of available editions. Click on the OS X installation of your choice to continue.)

Once the download is completed, the disk image may open by itself and mount a new volume which contains the Thunderbird application. If you do not see the new volume, double-click the Thunderbird dmg icon to open it. A Finder window appears, containing the Thunderbird application. Drag the Thunderbird icon to the Applications folder. Now eject the disk image by selecting it in a Finder window and pressing the command+E keys or by using the Finder's File menu, and selecting Eject.

Thunderbird is now ready for use. Open the Applications folder and start by double-clicking on the Thunderbird icon. You may get a security warning that Thunderbird has been downloaded from the Internet. Because you downloaded Thunderbird from the official site, you can click to continue.

Tip: You can add Thunderbird to your dock for easy access. Just open your Applications folder and drag Thunderbird to the dock.

The first time you start Thunderbird you will be alerted that it is not your default email application. (The default email application is the program that opens, for example, when you click a link on a web page to an email address.) If you want Thunderbird to be the default email application, click to set it as your default mailer. If not (for example if you are just trying out Thunderbird) click .

  • If you fail to install Thunderbird to the Mac applications, every time Thunderbird starts it will not have remembered your provious session settings - it will ask you to create email accounts, or otherwise indicate that it has no data. You must drag the Thunderbird dmg file/icon to the Mac Applications folder.
